Batteries operate on a chemical reaction. It is probably a conservative date, so most batteries will have a full life after that time. Better batteries will show a later expiration date. Alkaline battery life is so dependent on how the batteries are used, and there are no standards.

I thought these Sunbeam Alkaline wouldn’t very last long in the remote controls and clocks. But after a few months they work as good as any major brand batteries. BTW be sure to get the Alkaline batteries only and not “Super Heavy Duty” which don’t last as long.

A D battery (D cell or IEC R20) is a size of dry cell. A D cell is cylindrical with an electrical contact at each end; the positive end has a nub or bump. In 2007, D batteries accounted for 8% of alkaline primary battery sales (numerically) in the US.

You’re right, C and D batteries both are 1.5 volts. Actually, AA and AAA are also 1.5 volts. If they’re the same voltage, why not just use all AAA batteries and make things lighter and smaller. But there is a big difference between them all.

The Eveready brand battery lasted only 6 hours and 35 minutes and the Duracell brand lasted 15 hours. The Energizer brand lasted 22 hours and 15 minutes total. And the big winner: The Rayovac lasted 24 1/2 hours. The Eveready brand flashlight light went out very quickly and had to replace the batteries quite often.
