What can be done with recycled glass?

Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity. Glass is made from readily-available domestic materials, such as sand, soda ash, limestone and “cullet,” the industry term for furnace-ready recycled glass. The only material used in greater volumes than cullet is sand.

Glassware and ceramics are designed with a higher melting point than other types of glass and cannot be recycled (See References 1). Pyrex baking dishes, lightbulbs, fluorescent lighting, window glass, mirrors, plate glass, eyeglasses and glass art should also be left out of the recycling bin (See References 2).

Cartons include soup cartons, soy milk cartons, juice boxes, milk cartons, etc. Empty glass bottles and jars are recyclable, along with their lids and empty metal and aluminum beverage and food containers can be recycled, as can disposable aluminum bake ware and clean foil. You can recycle a lot more!

Broken Glass. Broken glass is recyclable, but it might not be reprocessed into new glass bottles. However, just because glass is crushed during recycling doesn’t mean you should do this prior to putting it in your bin. This could injure waste haulers or people sorting material at the recycling facility.

This means plastic can be recycled 7-9 times before it is no longer recyclable. Every time paper is recycled the fibres shorten. It is estimated paper can be recycled 4-6 times. Glass, steel and aluminium lose no quality during recycling and can be recycled endlessly.

Depending on whether your window glass is tinted, tempered, or safety glass, it may require a different temperature to melt. DO NOT put broken window glass in your recycling bin. Recycling window glass isn’t impossible to do, but it may require a bit of calling around.

Wax, Plastic or Foil-Coated Paper. Some items that are mainly composed of paper also have a small amount of wax, plastic or foil added to them, rending them not recyclable. Frozen food boxes, juice boxes, dairy milk cartons and soymilk cartons are specific types of these items, according to Earth911.

While you may think the recycling bin is the next step for your leftover glass, recycling colored glass is not as simple as one might think. First things first, not all colors of glass can be recycled together. Blue glass is made from naturally occurring iron impurities from the sand.

Drinking glasses or wine glasses can’t be recycled in your mixed recycling bin at home. This is because they are made out of toughened glass containing chemicals that can’t be recycled with your glass bottles and jars. These type of glass doesn’t melt at the same temperature as bottles and jars.

If your local recycling program accepts aluminum foil, it will most often accept other aluminum food storage products. At this point, the aluminum is cleaned and melted into sheets of aluminum, where it can be manufactured into aluminum cans or foil products.

The following items should not be placed into your recycling bin:

Any glass contaminated with stones, dirt, and food waste.

Ceramics, such as dishware, ovenware, and decorative items.

Heat-resistant glass, such as Pyrex.

Mixed colors of broken glass.

Mirror or window glass.

Metal or plastic caps and lids.

Crystal.

A: Incandescent lightbulbs should be wrapped in paper (to protect the garbage collector) and placed in the garbage. They are not recyclable. Compact Florescent Lighbulbs (CFLs) are considered hazardous waste upon disposal and must be recycled/disposed through a household hazardous waste program.

With single-stream programs, broken glass is mixed up with tons of other recyclables and is difficult to sort. Even with dual-stream recycling programs and drop-off centers where materials are collected separately, glass can be a problem. Remember…when there is no market, there is no recycling.

There is never enough out there, reports the Glass Packaging Institute, a trade organization that represents the industry. The Container Recycling Institute, another trade group, reports that recycling 1,000 tons of glass creates eight jobs. So, making sure those wine bottles get recycled can help the economy, too.

In Michigan and California, you can get 10 cents for every glass bottle you recycle. This should tell you which states provide payment for glass bottles and how much you can make in each individual state.

The more we understand the more effective we can recycle. Metal is a desirable material — the U.S. alone uses 100 million steel cans and twice that amount of aluminum cans every day. Fortunately, common types of metals such as tin cans, copper, aluminum and steel can be recycled.

Ordinary Batteries: Regular alkaline, manganese, and carbon-zinc batteries are not considered hazardous waste and can be disposed of with ordinary trash. Other common single use or rechargeable batteries such as lithium and button batteries are recyclable, but access to recycling may not be available in all locations.

As Duracell’s website says: “Alkaline batteries can be safely disposed of with normal household waste.” Energizer confirms that regular batteries are fine to toss in the trash, but says rechargeable batteries should be recycled according to US federal guidelines.
