Are an ape and a monkey the same thing?

The hominidae consists of chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and humans. These primates are collectively known as the ‘great apes’. Those that belong to the hylobatidae family consists of, at the very least, twelve species of gibbons. These primates are collectively called as the ‘lesser apes’.

Apes (hominoids)—consisting of gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans—are also catarrhines but are classically distinguished from monkeys. (Tailless monkeys may be called “apes”, incorrectly according to modern usage; thus the tailless Barbary macaque is sometimes called the “Barbary ape”.)

The most immediate distinction between apes and monkeys is the presence of a tail in monkeys. As for Gorillas, they are categorized as apes, along with Chimpanzees, Bonobos, Orangutans and Humans which constitute the great apes; and the lesser apes which includes four genera and sixteen species of gibbon.

A female horse and a male donkey have a mule. But hinnies and mules can’t have babies of their own. They are sterile because they can’t make sperm or eggs. They have trouble making sperm or eggs because their chromosomes don’t match up well.

According to the National Miniature Donkey Association (NMDA), these animals make good pets because they are affectionate and good with children. Don’t let the name fool you: Mini donkeys aren’t tiny. They are about 3 feet tall (1.5 meters) and weigh between 200 and 350 pounds (90 and 158 kilograms) at maturity.

Donkeys may appear to be very phlegmatic and disinterested but they have very deep feelings and emotions. Their disease patterns also run deep, when compared with horses. Donkeys are also very prone to stress and bereavement.

Donkeys can become territorial over their pasture and will sometimes attack small livestock and pets. This territorial aggressive behaviour, it is most likely to occur in young male donkeys especially in the springtime or when their environment provides little mental stimulation.

Donkeys are not easily startled (unlike horses) and have a keen sense of curiosity. Donkeys have a reputation for stubbornness but this is due to their highly developed sense of self preservation. It is difficult to force or frighten a donkey into doing something it sees as contrary to its own best interest or safety.

Donkeys are very social animals. A lone donkey kept as a pet needs a friend of either another donkey, horse or other animal. Feral donkeys live in small bands of females with their current and previous year’s female offspring. Donkeys are natural followers.

Companionship. A donkey should NEVER live alone. Most donkeys need the companionship of another donkey regardless of how much time it has with its human companion. Some donkeys can accept a horse or mule as companionship but that is the exception to the rule.

It doesn’t help a donkey’s reputation that so many truisms refer to his supposedly obstinate nature. There is a reason donkeys are believed to be stubborn, but his real character is probably more accurately reflected in the proverb, “Better to ride on an ass that carries me than on a horse that throws me.”
