At the low end of the totem pole are the primary care docs, you know the ones we need a whole lot more of. Pediatricians’ average compensation is $204,000 (up from $189,000 last year), family physicians $207,000 (up from 195,000), and internists $222,000 compared with $196,000 last year.

The occupations listed below are the 25 best paying, according to U.S. News & World Report and data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Anesthesiologist. Mean salary: $269,600.

Surgeon. Mean salary: $252,910.

Obstetrician and Gynecologist.

The median annual income for anesthesiologists in 2018 is $369,346 with the median hourly rate of $178. Half of all anesthesiologists earned more than this, while half earned less. However, salaries for this specialty were considerably higher than those for most other medical doctors.

Counting four years of undergraduate study, four years of medical school, and four years of residency, it takes twelve years to become an anesthesiologist. Some medical students enroll in combined six-year undergraduate and medical school programs, which can reduce the time needed to begin a career.

The highest earners — orthopedic surgeons and radiologists — were the same as last year, followed by cardiologists who earned $314,000 and anesthesiologists who made $309,000. The lowest earning doctors are the family guys. Pediatricians and family practitioners make about $156,000 and $158,000, respectively.

The downside is that you may only make the average $393,000 a year (source). Sure, it sounds nice, but in the world of brain surgeons, $393,000 is a pittance. Salaries for experienced neurosurgeons can climb as high as $750,000 per year (source).

After completing a four year bachelor’s degree, students then take four years of graduate education leading to a degree in medicine (M.D.) or osteopathy (D.O.). After receiving a medical degree, students must complete four more years in an anesthesiology residency.

Neurosurgeon Salary. The starting median salary, which is that amount where the same number of neurosurgeons earned less than that amount and the same number earned more, is more than $704,170. Neurosurgeons are among the highest paid of the medical professionals.

Their figures show an average annual salary of $364,689 for anesthesiologists across the country. That’s equal to $30,390 per month. The survey showed that those anesthesiologists who operated or partnered in a practice earned an average of $394,333 per year, while those who were salaried employees earned $348,406.

Once they have done this, just before the surgery, the anesthesiologist will administer either a general or local anesthetic to the patient. During the surgery, the anesthesiologist will monitor the patient’s blood pressure, heart rhythm, temperature, level of consciousness, and amount of oxygen in the blood.

The Department of Labor report that the average salary of a Cardiologist is $66,857, which equates to approximately $32 per hour based on 2,080 hours worked per year (or 40 hours per week).

Anesthesiologists are physicians specializing in perioperative care, developing anesthetic plans, and the administration of anesthetics. He or she has finished college, then medical school (four years), then an internship (one year) followed by a residency in anesthesia (three years).

Salary Range. Anesthesiologists’ assistants in their early years of practice can expect to earn salaries ranging from $95,000 to $120,000 per year, according to the American Medical Association. With the passage of time and increase in clinical experience, this can rise sharply.

According to Salary.com, the median annual Physician – Anesthesiology salary is $352,518, as of February 22, 2016, with a range usually between $305,400 – $399,629. Anesthesiologists with a lot of experience can expect to earn upwards of $450,000.

Average Pay. According to the ongoing Allied Physicians Salary Survey, plastic surgeons earn anywhere from $237,000 (entry-level) to $820,000 (top earners) per year. Additionally, Salary.com lists a median salary of $321,017 as of 2010 for reconstructive plastic surgeons.

The annual median pay for an entry-level radiologist was $206,920, or $99.48 per hour, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2016. Experienced radiologists may make as much as $470,000.

That might seem like serious money, but it pales in comparison an orthopedic surgeon’s $519,000 paycheck. Cardiologists make an awful lot, too. They are guaranteed an average base salary of $512,000, according to the Merritt Hawkins data. The third highest-paying specialty: Urology.
