What causes the color of eyes to change?

When the pupil size changes, the pigments in the iris compress or spread apart, changing the eye color a bit. Certain emotions can change both the pupil size and the iris color. That’s why some people say their eyes change colors when they’re angry or loving. However, some hazel eyes actually get darker with age.

Of the participants who were surveyed, the majority of both men and women found blue to be the most attractive eye color. In regard to eye colors other than blue, the study found that men preferred women who had green eyes over those with brown eyes.

The brown version of gene 1 is dominant over the blue one. The way geneticists represent these two different versions of this eye color gene are B for brown and b for blue (the capital letter is always the dominant, the lowercase, the recessive). So you will have brown eyes with either BB or Bb and blue eyes with bb.

Laser procedure can turn brown eyes blue. As it turns out, on a physical level, there’s no such thing as blue-colored eyes. They’re actually all brown. Melanin, the pigment that gives all irises (not to mention your skin and hair) is naturally brown, no matter what your eye color. The more melanin you have, the more light your eyes can absorb.

It turns out that eye color and most hair colors are way too complicated to be simple dominant/recessive traits. Surprisingly, blue-eyed parents sometimes have a brown-eyed child. Now this isn’t that common so we could still say that blue eyes are mostly recessive. The same isn’t really true for blonde hair.

Each human has two genes for eye color – one Brown/Blue and one Green/Hazel. Brown is dominant over all other alleles. Green and hazel have incomplete dominance. The heterozygous allele combination Gg produces hazel eyes.

HAZEL EYES: MIX OF GREEN, BROWN AND BLUE. Some people have lighter features of green while others have darker features of brown. Ocular scientists think hazel eye color is a combination of greens, browns and blues but if truth be told, they aren’t exactly sure. We do know however, that hazel is considered rare.

Grey. Grey eyes are a curious case, and extremely rare. Grey eyes are similar to blue in that they contain no melanin, but they do contain excess collagen deposits in the stroma that interfere with Tyndall scattering, blocking the appearance of blue hues. (That’s the current theory anyway).
