Can a bonsai tree be kept indoors?

Indoor bonsai are bonsai which are cultivated for the indoor environment. Traditionally, bonsai are temperate climate trees grown outdoors in containers. Kept in the artificial environment of a home, these trees weaken and die. But a number of tropical and sub-tropical tree species will survive and grow indoors.

The tree withstands the new environment and grows well once its branches and roots are pruned. Naturally dwarfed trees are weak and short lived. If one takes the bonsai tree from its pot and plants it in the ground, the plant grows into a tree similar to that of the parent tree.

Watering: Be careful not to water too much, as the juniper roots don’t like soil wetness. Before you water, the soil should dry slightly. Steps

Determine when your bonsai needs to be re-potted.

Pick the right time of year for repotting your plant.

Remove the old soil from the tree’s roots.

Remove some of the bonsai tree’s roots.

Reposition the tree in its pot.

Water the bonsai tree.

Do not repot on a routine, instead check on your trees every early spring by carefully removing the tree from its pot. A Bonsai needs to be repotted when the roots circle around the root system.

The most important components for Bonsai soil mixtures are Akadama, Pumice, Lava rock, organic potting compost and fine gravel (grit). This means that regular repotting is required, or that Akadama should be used in a mix with well-draining soil components.

Orchid soil mixes can be ideal for bonsai trees as well. The bark allows for excellent drainage and the size of the pieces is usually perfect for the right amount of aeration needed by bonsai trees. So many bonsai gardeners will use orchid soil/bark mixes for their trees or as a main ingredient in their own soil mixes.

Growing Bonsai from seed, step by step

First apply a layer of a coarse, water draining substrate, like lava rock or grit.

Next, add a layer of standard Bonsai soil.

Purchase or collect tree seeds and check if they need scarification or stratification.

Place the seeds on the soil, leave some room between the seeds.

Incandescent light is too hot and will not provide the various spectrum of light that is required to maintain your bonsai tree. Bonsai need about 5 hours of direct or indirect sunlight per day. Certain species of bonsai do best in the winter if they receive most of their light from indirect sources.
