Predators and prey. Gray wolves move and hunt mostly at night, especially in areas populated by humans and during warm weather. The main prey are large herbivores such as deer, elk, moose, bison, bighorn sheep, caribou, and musk oxen, which they chase, seize, and pull to the ground.

The wolf’s only major natural predator. It is often mentioned that the wolves have no natural predators. Bears of various species will kill wolf pups, and sometimes, they will kill wolves over territorial disputes and access to carcasses. Cougars and leopards have been known to take the odd wolf.

Other than humans, surplus killing has been observed among zooplankton, damselfly naiads, predaceous mites, martens, weasels, honey badgers, wolves, orcas, red foxes, leopards, lions, spotted hyenas, spiders, brown and black and polar bears, coyotes, lynx, mink, raccoons, dogs, and house cats.

Large male grizzly bears—also called brown bears—occasionally kill and eat grizzly bear cubs. And large male polar bears sometimes kill and eat small polar bears. Bears are omnivores, which means they eat almost anything, from insects to berries to large animals, and carrion—animals that have been dead for a while.

Opportunistic hunters, mountain lions typically hunt alone from dusk to dawn, taking their prey (primarily deer) from behind. On average, a lion will kill a deer about once a week. They also dine on coyotes, raccoons, rodents, elk, feral hogs, and even porcupines.

Cougars prey on deer. They also eat smaller animals such as coyotes, porcupines, and raccoons. Mountain lions usually hunt at night or during the hours of dawn and dusk. The one thing grizzly bears, black bears, skunks and mountain lions have in common?

If you see a mountain lion:

Stay calm. Hold your ground or back away slowly.

Do not approach a lion. Never approach a mountain lion especially one that is feeding or with kittens.

Do not run from a lion. Running may stimulate a mountain lion’s instinct to chase.

Do not crouch down or bend over.

Situation 3 – Bear has detected you and shows signs of aggression

Assess the situation.

Do Not Run.

Try to retreat slowly.

Climb a tree if available.

If the bear charges you.

Use your pepper spray.

If a black bear (or any bear that is stalking you) makes contact.

If a grizzly makes contact.

As with many predators, a cougar may attack if cornered, if a fleeing human stimulates their instinct to chase, or if a person “plays dead.” Standing still however may cause the cougar to consider a person easy prey.

As demonstrated by a once vast geographical range, the mountain lion is a very adaptive and effective predator. In Montana, and throughout the western United States, the mountain lion’s primary prey species are deer and elk. It is not unusual for a 100-pound mountain lion to kill a 400-pound elk.

After killing a large animal, a cougar hides the carcass and eats in the coming days. For the most part, the cougar has no natural enemies and sits atop the food chain. However, they occasionally compete with other predators such as bears and wolves for food. During most of their lives, cougars are solitary creatures.

Grizzly bears are powerful, top-of-the-food-chain predators, yet much of their diet consists of nuts, berries, fruit, leaves, and roots. Bears also eat other animals, from rodents to moose. Grizzlies are typically brown, though their fur can appear to be white-tipped, or grizzled, lending them their traditional name.

Like coyotes, they hunt in packs. bringing down large prey, such as moose and elk as well as smaller mammals. Coyotes are not preferred prey, but wolves will kill them to cut down competition for food and may eat them.

It’s long been known that coyotes attack pets, but there’s also a sense that cats can scamper up a tree if they sense danger, says Harris. That vastly understates the danger, she says. “A coyote can jump a six-foot fence and take a small dog or cat and be back in a flash – do it right in front of you.”

Common predators that eat coyotes include bears, cougars, wolves, mountain lions and other coyotes. Dogs and eagles are also opportunistic predators against coyote pups.

The New York Times pointed out that “the species is not endangered, but it faces threats from habitat loss and hunting.” After that, it was hard not to wonder: If people hunt giraffes, they must eat them. Meat [from] one giraffe can be equal to meat that one gets from four elands [antelopes].”

Couple of preliminaries. First- -like any meat, this animal is safe to eat if cooked thoroughly and properly. I personally have never heard of a coyote contracting something like CWD disease, as deer do. Some hunters I’ve spoken to have eaten coyote, with differing opinions on taste and preparation.
