What are ceramic brakes made of?

A special feature of carbon-ceramic brake disks is the ceramic composite material they are made from. Both the carbon-ceramic brake disk body and the friction layers applied to each side consist of carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide. The main matrix components are silicon carbide (SiC) and elemental silicon (Si).

Noise from ceramic brake pads no cause for alarm. The noise is just a slight rubbing because your old rotors have been worn in the shape of your old pads, and the new pads don’t match them exactly. But they’re perfectly safe, and your brakes will stop the car just the way they’re supposed to.

While ceramic brake pads cost a little more, they usually last longer than semi metallic brake pads and are able to stand up to heavy amounts of stop and go driving. They also do not create as much brake dust as other types of brake pads.

These pads use ceramic compounds and copper fibers in place of the semi-metallic pad’s steel fibers. This allows the ceramic pads to handle high brake temperatures with less heat fade, provide faster recovery after the stop, and generate less dust and wear on both the pads and rotors.

If your brakes are squeaking or squealing while driving down the road, but the noise goes away when you press on the brakes, I have a hunch that your brake wear indicator is hitting the rotor and causing the noise. The wear indicator is a small metal tab fastened to the brake pad.

After resurfacing the rotors, be sure to wash with warm, soapy water to prevent brake noise. I know it’s an extra step and brake clean works just as well — so you think! Try this: resurface a rotor, blast it with brake clean and wipe with a clean paper towel, repeat again and one more time.

Typically, the regular vehicles have four common brake pad types:

Semi-Metallic. With long-term durability and excellent heat transfer capability, semi-metallic is the most common brake pad type used widely in different vehicles.

Non-Asbestos Organic.

Low-Metallic NAO.

Ceramic.

There are several types of brake fluid. They include glycol-based fluids DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1, as well as a silicone-based brake fluid named DOT 5. The silicone-based brake fluid is put only into vehicles with non-ABS systems. These must not have ever been filled with the glycol-based fluids.

Brake wear is an indeterminate science – in some cases the brake pads will do 70,000 miles while other drivers will find they need changing after only 25,000 miles. The type of vehicle, type of use and your driving style all have an influence on pad life.

Clean the area on the piston and caliper where the pad backing plate touches. Apply the anti-squeal adhesive, reinstall the pads and button up. These anaerobic products will stay gummy until you apply the brakes and squeeze out the oxygen. Then they stick like, well, glue.

Generally, brake pads need to be replaced after about 50,000 miles. Some need to be replaced after 25,000, while others can last for 70,000 miles – it all depends on the factors listed above. To get a more accurate number for your car’s specific needs, consult the owner’s manual.

If individual wheel cylinders need to be replaced, the cost will go up. The repair price for an entire brake job—rotors, calipers, drums, pads, cylinders—can run you $750 or more.

They are good at transferring the heat generated by the friction that is created from the contact with the brake rotors. Metallic pads provide good performance, and much better resistance to brake fade than Organic pads. They are also a more cost effective option.

In use since the 1980s, ceramic pads were developed as an alternative replacement for organic and semi-metallic brake pads. At the time, these types produced too much noise and dust. Ceramic pads are also generally easier on rotors than semi-metallic pads.

Besides being quieter, ceramic brake pads handle extremely high temperatures with little fade, allowing them to recover quickly and cause less damage to the rotors. Also, when ceramic brake pads wear down, they create a finer, lighter dust than semi-metallic pads, and the dust doesn’t stick to wheels.
