Are chilli plants annual or perennial?

Freezing temperatures kill chillies, so the plants must be overwintered in a frost-free environment. Keeping them in an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel won’t work, so don’t even think about it. The temperature, however, doesn’t have to be overly warm since the plants need only to survive, not thrive.

Late summer and early fall can bring unpredictable drops in temperatures, even an occasional frost. Like all hot peppers, jalapenos are intolerant of frost. Mature plants with ripening fruit may be destroyed if they get hit by frost.

Although in their native habitat, tomato plants grow as perennials, they are usually grown as an annual for cultivation. Tomatoes are referred to as tender perennials, as they will generally succumb once temperatures drop, especially once frost hits.

To finish your pepper winter care, about a month before your last frost date, bring your pepper plant out of the cool location and move it to a brighter, warmer location. You may even want to use a heating pad under the pot to add additional heat. Resume watering, but make sure not to over water the pepper plant.

Tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum), which are one of the most common home garden vegetable plants, are tender perennials grown as annuals in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 2 through 10. When grown as a perennial, these plants produce tomatoes year round and can reach the size of a small tree.

Biennials complete their life cycle within two growing seasons. And perennials live for more than two years, repeating the grow to seed process anew every season until the plant dies. The majority of vegetables people plant in gardens – lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, peppers, carrots, beans, etc. – are annuals.

Trim jalapeno plants at the end of summer or early fall to extend pepper growth until your area’s first killing frost. Remove suckers, or the thin stems growing between two larger stems. When you remove suckers, the plant puts more energy into pepper production.

Strawberry plants that are to be treated as annuals are planted closer together than those that are left to grow as perennials. For annuals, mound or hill up rows of soil about 6″ or 8″ tall, spacing the rows about 2′ apart.

There are many perennials crops that are known and loved by gardeners everywhere, including these ten common ones:

raspberries, blueberries and other berry bushes.

asparagus.

rhubarb.

kale (usually grown as an annual)

garlic (usually grown as an annual)

radicchio (usually grown as an annual)

horseradish.

globe artichokes.

Most folks plant bell and chili peppers in the late spring, enjoy the fruits from mid-summer until the first frost and then pull the plants up. But in frost-free areas, peppers are happy to behave like the perennials they truly are.

Basil is an annual herb that lasts one year. When planning your herb garden, it’s important to keep in mind the growth habits of each plant. Some herbs are annuals, some are perennials, and some form small evergreen shrubs.

Peppers are perennial plants under frost-free conditions. They continue to grow and produce fruits for over five years as indoor house plants. Peppers are self-fertile and don’t need pollinating insects to set fruit. Seeds sprout about a week after planting if the soil is warm enough.

Past experience in a hot summer region leads me to believe that a single tomato plant can yield as much as 20-30 pounds per season. Since I’m gardening in a region that’s new to me and notorious for being hard to grow tomatoes in, let’s assume I can get 10-15 pounds of tomatoes from each plant.

Tomatoes take 20 to 30 days to reach maturity from the time they first appear, so expect your tomato plants to begin producing fruits 40 to 50 days after planting them in the ground.

Although preferring the warm spring and summer seasons for fruiting, it is possible to grow tomatoes year-round within a small to medium greenhouse. By using different cultivars and carefully controlling the surrounding climate, your tomato plants are able to produce fruits periodically throughout the year.
