Is rhododendron wood poisonous?

Over 1000 species of rhododendrons/azaleas exist. When burned the gryanotoxin is destroyed at temperatures of 150 degrees Celsius and above, and no evidence of toxicity has been found in the smoke or coals of the rhododendron plant. It is a hard long-burning wood and can be used safely.

Spectacular and beautiful, not many people know the common rhododendron hides a poisonous secret – its nectar is toxic to bees. The resulting honey from rhododendrons has also been known to contaminate honey, making it unsafe for humans to eat.

All parts of the bluebell plant contain toxic glycosides that are poisonous to humans and animals including dogs, horses and cattle. Ingestion of any parts of the plant such as flowers, leaves or bulbs causes a lowering of the pulse rate, nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting.

Lilac bushes (Syringa spp.) are a feast for the eyes and nose, with their large clusters of showy, fragrant flowers. If your pets want to sample a taste of the bush as well, never fear — the plants are not poisonous to animals and are not toxic to humans at all.

Hydrangeas are, indeed, poisonous to cats. The poisonous elements of the plants are its cyanogenic glycosides, which are metabolites that exist in various plants. Hydrangeas aren’t just toxic to cats, but also to a variety of other animals including horses and dogs. Keep hydrangeas far away from all of your pets.

While it’s unlikely anyone will actually die at your wedding from eating cake decorated with hydrangeas, they are simply not good for humans. Chose flowers that are non-toxic and/or edible (and note that the two are not always the same. While all edible flowers are non-toxic; non all non-toxic flowers are edible).

According to the ASPCA, baby’s breath is not toxic to cats, humans, dogs or horses. That said, if your cat ingests a large amount of the plant, mild stomach upset, vomiting or diarrhea can occur. While rose petals, leaves and stems are not poisonous to cats, there are plenty of other plant species that are.

Toxicity. All parts of chrysanthemum plants are potentially toxic to dogs, cats, horses and other mammals. Ingesting the plant can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive salivating, rashes or a lack of coordination, according to the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Human Toxicity. Dahlia tubers and leaves contain phototoxic polyacetylene compounds that can cause skin irritation in humans who are handling the plant’s leaves and tubers in sunlight. The plant can be toxic if eaten in large amounts, according to the North Carolina State University Extension.

Toxicity. Marigold flowers and leaves are considered safe to eat by humans and are commonly used as culinary herbs. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, pot marigolds are also not considered toxic to puppies when ingested or touched.

People and pets, including horses, dogs and cats, can experience hydrangea poisoning. For hydrangea poisoning to occur, a person or pet must eat very large quantities of the leaves, buds and/or flowers. There is one recorded case of a horse eating a potted hydrangea and becoming seriously poisoned.

Lantana (Lantana) is also called Red sage, Wild sage, Yellow Sage, and Shrub Verbena. Triterpenoids (liver toxins) are found in all parts of the plant. When ingested, clinical signs include depression, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and possible liver failure (which occurs more commonly with farm animals).

Humans: Although wild columbine has no known toxicity issues with humans, care should still be taken when handling or touching this plant as it belongs to the Ranunculaceae family that does have many specifies with known toxicity issues for humans and animals. The flowers, however, are edible to humans and animals.

Chrysanthemums are flowering herbaceous plants but are mums annual or perennial? The answer is both. There are several species of chrysanthemum, with some being hardier than others. The perennial type are often called hardy mums.

Potted mums are not the same as the hardy varieties that go into garden beds. Growing chrysanthemums indoors is easy and requires little special care beyond watering, good soil and drainage. Once the blooms are spent, you can keep the plant around for its deeply etched foliage.

Though the plant may cause skin irritation in some individuals, carnations are generally not considered threatening to humans. When grown organically, the petals of carnations are actually edible.

Planting. Most hydrangeas thrive in rich, porous, somewhat moist soils. Add compost to enrich poor soil. They prefer full sun in the morning, with some afternoon shade; however, many will grow and bloom in partial shade.

Perennials. Perennials are typically herbaceous, non-woody plants, but trees and woody shrubs may also be called perennials since their life spans are longer than one season. Some common perennials include asters, clematis, hosta, hydrangeas, peonies and purple coneflowers.

Foxglove, while very beautiful with its trumpet like blossoms, are very poisonous to dogs, cats, and even humans! Foxglove contains naturally-occurring poisons that affect the heart, specifically cardenolides or bufadienolides.
