Can I use wall paint for furniture?

For furniture it’s best to use a satin or semigloss finish in either a latex or an oil-based paint. Never leave primer unpainted. If you choose a latex paint, a latex primer is an excellent choice for most uses. It goes on easily and blocks most stains, but it doesn’t have the odor of an oil-based primer.

Prime Before You Paint. Any latex paint color you’ve used on your walls can work for refurbishing wood furniture, but it is important to use some of that leftover primer first to get a smooth finish and cover well. Leftover paint can also be used as a primer.

It gives the paint a decent surface to stick to and gives a much better finish. Use a wood primer or multi-purpose primer/undercoat on wood, and a metal primer for metal. If you can’t face the bother of eggshell or gloss, you can get a good and surprisingly hard-wearing finish using emulsion paint.

Satin: Satin finish paint has a smooth, velvety look with a bit more gloss. It is most often used for windows, doors, trim, or ceilings, but it can also be used as wall paint. This finish will magnify any surface imperfections, so careful preparation and sanding are essential before painting with high gloss paints.

To get paint to adhere to wood, you usually have to sand to get it to grip, especially with anything that’s varnished. You can paint without sanding by using a liquid sander deglosser! It removes the finish, giving it a rough texture without the effort.

You can’t simply put the masonry paint directly on the wood as wood is porous. Without the preparation being carried out the paint will flake off, and you may have problems with paint dust and chalking, to name just a few. Therefore, applying the correct primer, and choosing the right type of masonry paint is a must.

Here’s an interior-painting primer, starting with the pros and cons of oil-based and water-based, or latex, paints. Oil-based paint is more durable, but it takes longer to dry, and cleanup requires turpentine or paint thinner (mineral spirits).

The brand is Zinsser, but make sure you get the shellac-based version. It is formulated for use on laminate furniture, which most primers aren’t.

You may do this, but you have to use more paint to get the job done. Ceiling paint is a finisher, not a sealer; consequently, rough drywall soaks it up like a sponge. So be prepared to do a bit more work when you use ceiling paint as a primer for drywall.

Follow These Steps

Lay a drop cloth. If painting inside, you’ll want to protect your furnishings.

Sand furniture. For a smooth finish, use a flexible-foam sanding sponge or 220-grit sandpaper.

Dust furniture. To remove residual grit, you can use a clean cloth or a vacuum.

Prime.

Paint.

Let dry for at least two hours.

Medium and fine grades of sandpaper are generally used in refinishing furniture and antiques. Coarse grits (those under #100) damage a fine wood finish. Medium grits, such as #120 and #150, are useful for removing old finish or scratches.

Painting with an oil based paint over latex is OK but doing the reverse will cause you grief for many years to come since any further coats of paints applied will stick to the latex only. Sanding the walls will improve adhesion which is the only sticking point to consider when applying latex over oil.

Quality latex paint is significantly thicker than traditional finishes and must be thinned before it is useful as a spray finish. Insufficient thinning results in the paint coming out of the spray gun in unsightly blobs or not at all. Thin the paint with water and mix well before spraying.

A primer (/ˈpra?m?r/) or undercoat is a preparatory coating put on materials before painting. Priming ensures better adhesion of paint to the surface, increases paint durability, and provides additional protection for the material being painted.

You can sand, prime and paint laminate as if it were a solid wood piece of furniture! It’s easy to skip the sanding step, because sanding is a drag… but it’s especially important with laminate. Because it’s often somewhat glossy-looking, and important to sand it down until the finish is very dull before priming.

Paint doesn’t cure, or reach maximum hardness, until days after the paint is dry. Oil-based paints cure faster (in about 7 days) than latex paints (in about 30 days). So, don’t put your newly painted dining room table into heavy rotation until the paint has fully cured and will withstand everyday use.

Latex paint is a general term which covers all paints that use synthetic polymers such as acrylic, vinyl acrylic (PVA), styrene acrylic, etc. as binders. Our brothers and sisters in the UK use the general term “emulsion” instead of latex but it is the same type of paint that we term “latex” paint in USA.
