To paint over a stain, lightly sand all glossy surfaces until the finish is dull, then wipe it down with a damp rag dipped in de-glosser. Allow time to dry. Then with even strokes, apply a quick-dry primer-sealer to prevent bleed-through. Allow the sealer to dry, and you’re ready for your finish coat.

Both oil- and water-based polyurethane can be applied to latex/acrylic paint; however, oil-based polyurethane will create a yellow or amber hue, especially to light colors. To add durability without affected color, use a water-based finish.

Liquid sandpaper is a chemical solution that removes the glossy layer from a painted item, enabling you to paint over the object without the paint dripping off. Unlike regular sandpaper, it just removes gloss; it can’t be used to smooth the surface, correct imperfections or as a paint primer.

Sanding the stain is helpful because it roughens the finish, allowing the paint adhere to the surface of the wood. You don’t need to strip the stain off, only mar the surface. In some cases, the stain may not be glossy and paint may have no trouble adhering to the wood.

But with careful preparations, you can paint over finished wood in your home and update its look. It requires some patient sanding and oil-based paint products to adhere to the plastic and polyurethane finishes on wood and commercial wood furniture.

Apply Primer. Applying oil-based or shellac primer is a required step when painting over stained wood. Stain is oil-based, so latex primers won’t adhere to it properly. If you use an oil-based primer, you’ll have to rough up the surface of the primer so the latex paint adheres better.

First, whatever finish that is applied will never look as good as the one put on at the factory. Second, polyurethane is not the best choice for painting over lacquer finishes. Polyurethane will not bond or grip well with the lacquer and will peel off over time with general use. Instead, use an alkyd varnish.

Most times simply cleaning and dusting off the surface will do. Change out your piece of sandpaper when it becomes clogged with old paint and other debris.

Staining laminate furniture can be problematic: Laminate is not made from wood; it is a plastic material printed with a wood grain, so traditional liquid stains meant for wood can’t absorb into the material. Polyurethane stain will only work to darken laminate furniture.
