Can I wash a down coat?

Wash your jacket, if desired, according to the instructions on the care tag.

Put the down jacket and one sneaker or tennis shoe in the clothes dryer.

Run the dryer for five to 10 minutes, or until the jacket is as puffy as you’d like.

Place your jacket in the washing machine on a warm cycle (not hot or cold) and put in the down wash as directed. When it’s time to dry, use a very low heat setting on your dryer and throw in three clean tennis balls to help break up wet clumps of down.

If possible use a tumble dryer on a low heat with the added aid of drying balls, or half cut tennis balls as a budget option. This method will help to beat the down fill into shape allowing for maximum loft and warmth. Once dry remove from the machine and lightly shake the garment.

Here’s how to wash your down jacket at home:

Find a front-loading washing machine; the agitator of a top-loader can damage down feathers.

Set the dial to cold water, and add a touch of a down specific cleaner.

After the wash cycle, make sure the jacket gets a thorough rinse; maybe set it for an extra cycle.

Down jackets are usually pricey, so you want to be careful when cleaning the garment. Although you may think your down jacket needs to be dry cleaned, this isn’t necessarily the case. While it’s fine to have it professionally cleaned, dry cleaning is not recommended, because the chemicals can damage the filling.

Here’s what to do:

Buy a specialty detergent. Gear Aid ReviveX Down Cleaner, $8, Amazon.

Wash once, then rinse. Wash your jacket (or vest, or comforter) in water set to a cold temperature.

Dry low and slow. Make sure you keep your dryer temperature low.

Pack the dryer with tennis balls.

Break up clumps as you go.

Machine-wash

Machine-wash your down jacket on a gentle cycle at 30 degrees °C. If it’s available, select the ‘extra rinse’ option. Use a down-specific soap or detergent, like Granger’s Downwash.

Skip the spin cycle. It’s better for your jacket to drip dry and/or use a tumble dryer.

Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Machine wash your polyester or polyester blend garments in warm water on the “permanent press” setting. Use a mild powdered laundry detergent (non-toxic, biodegradable types preferred) and line dry, or tumble dry on low heat. (Remove it from the dryer quickly to prevent wrinkling).

Method 3 Washing the Jacket by Hand

Fill a large sink with soap and water. For down jackets that recommend handwashing, or if you don’t feel comfortable washing yours in the machine, you can also wash them by hand.

Soak the jacket.

Rinse the jacket.

Soak again.

Squeeze out excess water.

You can absolutely wash your down comforter without spending upwards of $60 (depending on the size, where you live and how dirty it is) to have it dry cleaned professionally. All you need is a mild detergent, wool dryer balls (or tennis balls), a few hours to spend at a laundromat and patience.

Make sure the washing machine is set to cold water and delicate/wool, as this will reduce the risk of damage occurring to your suit. Once the washing machine is finished with the load, remove your suit, turn it right side out and hang it on a hanger. After a couple of hours it should be dry and ready to wear!

Keeping your jacket dark

Wash in cold water, short cycle and low heat dry.

Never use bleach.

Wash inside out and add a thimble of vinegar.

Only wash when needed, denim will naturally fade when washed.

Do up all the zips and velcro on the bag, if it has a waterproof shell turn it inside out. Place your sleeping bag in the machine and add a technical cleaner. Regular detergent or softener can damage down sleeping bags. Wash your down sleeping bag at 30° or on a delicate cycle.

Method 1 Using a Washing Machine

Wash your hoodie every 6-7 wears. Before washing your hoodie, determine if a wash is needed.

Zip it up.

Secure the zipper.

Turn your hoodie inside out.

Put your hoodie into the washing machine.

Set your washer on the delicate cycle.

Wash your hoodie in cold water.

To clean leather, mix a solution of warm water and dish soap, dip a soft cloth into it, wring it out and wipe the jacket. You can also make a cleaning solution of one part vinegar to one part water. Use a second clean, damp cloth to wipe off the cleaning solution. Dry the jacket with a towel.
